hello legs, goodbye thanksgiving

Today, I attempted to get a long (20 mile) run in, but was defeated by two major problems. The first, inclines. I set out from my apt and headed up (up being the operative word) to the zoo. I definitely underestimated the impact Thursday’s race had on my body. My legs were fatigued and not happy about the 1.5 mile ascent to, and then through the zoo. To make things worse, I then headed to the Cathedral…more uphill. By the time I reached Wisconsin Ave to head DOWN into Georgetown, my body was too tired to fully appreciate the relief of the downhill route. By the time I got to the Mall, I decided to lap around the monuments before heading back home. In total I ran about 10 miles and decided to attempt the 20 tomorrow morning.
My second problem of the day was Thanksgiving. My stomach was upset from the start. Apparently roadside diner food coupled with a day of gluttony is not good for marathon training. Shocking, I know. It didn’t matter that last night I had a healthy serving of whole wheat pasta and chicken sausage, or that this morning’s pre-race fuel was a bowl of oatmeal and Kashi go-lean. No. The damage had been done. I defintely consumed one vodka drink and one cheese plate too many to expect my body to perform well today.
Hopefully tomorrow’s run will be much more successful with one more day between me and the muscle pain of the Turkey Trot/Thanksgiving bingefest.
