Sweaty Ballots

Did you guys hear?
It’s cold out.
This is probably brand new information to you. Absolutely no one is talking about it.
In related news, Vermont is currently considering whether it will deny me of the right to call it my home state after I complained about the weather in DC.
The first sign of a native Vermonter turning into a total wimp may or may not be the act of describing conditions in DC as “insanely cold” when it is a full FORTY DEGREES colder up north. Or, as one friend’s father in VT put it, “it’s only 56 degrees below freezing.”
Next time someone asks why I moved, I’m showing them weather.com screenshots from today.
Regardless of how much colder it is in the Green Mountain State, it’s still F-ing cold in the District. So cold that I finally broke the no pants streak I’ve kept alive since Snowmaggedon of 2010.
Snowmaggedon with pants on the left, an unpictured blissful three years of running shorts in the middle, this morning’s tragic death of the no pants dance on the right. Womp womp.
If you’re looking for a way to stay warm today, I have two suggestions to get your digits moving:
First, I was excited to learn this morning that Sweat Once a Day was nominated for Best Running Blog in DC in Run Washington’s Best of Washington Running poll.
DC and its weekly races, endless running routes and amazing community of runners has completely changed me as an athlete and a person. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to be included on this list.
Run Washington is my go to source for race information in DC. If you’re local, bookmark it ASAP and if you’re from out of town, I highly recommend using it to explore the DC race scene before your next visit to our ‘hood.
It probably takes about two minutes to fill out the survey and vote. I suggest seizing the opportunity to educate yourself on some of DC’s best races, running stores, and running paths as you cast your votes. My one complaint that this girl shares with me is that you can’t select “all of the above” for some of the questions-especially the “what’s your favorite thing about running in DC?” If you do me a solid and submit your ballot, I promise the next finish line beer is on me.
Secondly, Vermont City Marathon (the best marathon on the planet, in case you forgot) is running a really cool contest for their 2013 race (pun intended). They are selecting one marathoning newbie to be the rookie of the year and document her training escapades on the official Run Vermont blog over the next four months.
One of my brother’s best friends submitted an entry for the rookie race and could use a few votes from you guys to clinch the victory!
Meet my brother and Krysten. No, I can’t tell you what they are doing. I’m guessing cross-training for the marathon. Krysten is clearly going to kill this thing.
If she wins, I guarantee you will want to add her marathon blogging to your reader. This girl is hilarious
Positively adorable
More Krysten and Jameson. I assume this is also marathon training…of the spectator variety to get Jameson ready for the sidelines. Jamo, show up in anything less than a tiger onesie and both Krysten and I will probably never speak to you again.
And ready to train her ass off (in a safe and responsible way of course) for this May’s Vermont City Marathon.
Vote HERE for Krysten. It takes two seconds. Seriously. Move those fingers, click over and VOTE in just two very small, very quick seconds and we’ll all get four straight months of killer jokes, hilarious training stories, and more tiger onesie shots.

Seriously vote for my sister and my friend Krysten. No promises of onesies. But I can guarantee you laughs(Krysten almost had a TV fall on her a the gym the other day) and maybe I’ll give Emily a shirtless photo (of me) to throw on the site for those who vote!
It makes me uncomfortable when you promise shirtless photos over my blog. Let’s keep it PG, Jamo.
EMILY you make my heart smile. thank you. and jameson, seriously? i just got a BIG case of the embarrassment chills. ps i love you.
Consider it done! And sometimes you just have to break the (self-imposed) rules and wear the pants. Or tights.
The Kidless Kronicles
Done and done! Krysten is in the lead! I was able to make some legit votes on the DC thing, too, since I grew up in NoVA (live in SW Virginia now).
Good luck to both of you!! Fingers crossed.
Thank you for both!
This post warms my heart. After living in Vermont for a while (VCM = best. race. ever., although Covered Bridges is a close second) I moved to the midwest for grad school. Fun fact – they delay/cancel school out here when the temperature drops to 15deg because it’s TOO COLD. If that happened in Vermont, there’d be no school in some parts from Nov-Feb. Nonetheless, no pants for 3y is hardcore!
I am ashamed to admit that I have never done covered bridges. I clearly need to remedy that ASAP!
Voted on both counts!
Votes on both! I believe you now owe me a beer, lol!!! Stay warm!
The pint glass is chilled and ready. Thanks for the votes!
I voted for you! How cool!
Thank you!

and are you running VCM 2013?
Thank you and thank you! And yes, I would NEVER miss it.
Hi Emily…been reading your blog for a while though I haven’t yet commented. Just voted for you! Curious about what you put for the last question. What race have you been wanting to try?
And yeah, you’re right. It’s f-ing cold out. Made the mistake of running over the 14th St. bridge yesterday and you know what else? Its also f-ing windy.
Thanks for the vote! I’m trying to remember what I put down-what were the options? And yes, add f-ing windy to the list of things it is in DC, I’ve been avoiding the bridges like whoa.
Not multiple choice- you could put anything. So I froze and left it blank.
Voted for you Emily!!
oh, i saw your pint glass was from Umstead – have you run down there? really cool park!!
Voted for both! I just love your blog! Hope you stay warm with all the crazy, freezing weather. I call anything under 50 degrees “insanely cold weather”!
Totally voted – checking that off the list – but also completely unrelated – I have a couple hoka questions for you! Do you think they really help with injury prevention? I can’t seem to get through two training cycles without injury and it’s f*ing pissing me off, and my podiatrist seems to think different shoes (aka cushioned to the max) would help.
I do! Like really, really do. It depends on the injury, but for me and constant stress fractures, they’ve been amazing. And super cushioned is definitely what you get. Feel free to email me with more specific questions! ehalnon at gmail.
